Konica introduced the Hexar RF on October 13, 1999. The first substantially new M mount camera body since the M6 in 1984. October 2003: the HEXAR was discontinued. The legendary Konica HEXAR RF was the only other rangefinder camera that could be taken seriously in a world where Leica M's rule supreme. A true pleasure to use; intuitive design, solid build w/ Titanium top and bottom covers, AE exposure with AE lock, motorized film advance and rewind, a clear bright view finder w/ shutter speed display, and an electronic metal shutter with a wider shutter speed range. features that no Leica M had until the introduction of the Leica M7 in 2002. uses the SAME framelines combinations as Leica: 28+90, 50+75, 35+135 which are automatically selected when you mount the lens, and even uses the same type of frame preview lever in the same M location. Unable to get this camera serviced in the US I left it in the capable hands of the experts at Ginza Camera Shop in Tokyo, Japan, when I was there 6 months ago. It took 3 months and cost 30000 Yen (approx. US0) to have a blinking 11 error code fixed, and have the camera cleaned and serviced, and rangefinder adjusted. It's like new again. Ridiculously happy to have it back. Money well spent to have this camera performing like a new shooter again.

First of all, I might as well kick off this review by stating that it's easy to provide a positive review of this Nikon laser rangefinder. Besides the standard look and feel features, the performance is top notch. Features include multiple targeting modes, waterproof & fogproof construction, long eye relief, bright sharp viewing optics, compact size and light weight. The unit comes with a belt case, neck lanyard and battery.

In field testing the Monarch 800 matches all stated specs for this model. Maximum range is 800 yards with +-.5 yard precision. The 6X21 magnification optics let you clearly see objects several hundred yards away.

Compared to other rangefinders the performance of the 800 is very fast and accurate. The delay time to range a target, even one that's over 500 yards is almost instantaneous. This is really a nice feature when you consider that reaction time is crucial in unexpected hunting situations.

Ranging trees or brush at the edge of a clearing for ranging your scope is a piece of cake. In addition, the targeting viewfinder provides easy to understand symbols and target distance readout. Besides the normal operational mode there are two other specialty modes. First target priority mode provides targeted, very specific ranging to objects such as individual trees or deer. The distant target priority mode provides the distance to the farthest target obtained while ranging multiple objects.

By the way, the Monarch Laser 800 is not just designed for hunting. It is also a great rangefinder for golfers. At the driving range and on the course, this unit will allow you to spot pins, trees, hazards, bunkers and fairways and determine their exact distance in yards.
